We chatted to Craft Gin Club member, ambassador (and massive gin fan), Phillip Schofield to find out how he likes to drink his gin in the colder, winter months; we were lucky enough to discover his favourite ginny tipples and get the lowdown on his top tips for the ideal January gin and tonic - and they sound absolutely delicious!

Phillip Schofield: “People don’t necessarily think about gin as being a winter drink. But there are so many different styles of gin to complement this icy time of year, and many gins even have special winter editions. I love tasting them, especially really lovely gins with notes of orange and winter spice.

“I think that this time of year, when it’s dark and freezing, you want something clean and crisp, but with the added brightness of orange and the warmth of winter spice. Gin is such a chameleon with flavour profiles that I never struggle to find the perfect one for long, dark evenings.

“One thing I will say is that my glasses always tend to get bigger this time of year! Forget the highballs – in the winter I like a big, chunky copa or something with a really solid base, so that I can really pack in fruit.

“In terms of garnishes, I like lemon and orange peel, or dried grapefruit and a cinnamon stick. We have rosemary in the garden, and even at this time of year it’s lovely. Pop a spring in a G&T with star anise and you have the perfect winter drink!

“Around this time of year I also fancy a warm cocktail. Something with apple and liquorice always hits the spot… seems I’ll have to spend these cold winter nights experimenting!” (Pssst, Phil - try one of our hot gin cocktails for winter - you’ll love them!)
