Do you like a gin and tonic but when it comes to the cocktail bar, you default to a different classic tipple that doesn’t feature gin, or skip the unknowns in favour of an easy glass of prosecco? Maybe you’ve heard about the gin craze that’s sweeping the globe right now and aren’t sure which gin cocktails you would like, because you usually go for a vodka or whisky-based drink? Or maybe you’re a long-time gin lover who’s trying to convince a friend that they can and will love gin if they can be brave enough to try a few different cocktails?!

Well, help is at hand: read on to discover exactly which gin cocktails you should try based on your current favourite tipple! These aren’t simply cocktails where we’ve replaced the original type of alcohol with gin; they are well-established drinks in their own right. So go on, be brave - we promise you won’t regret it!

Love this? Whisky Sour

Then try this: Gin Sour

50 ml gin
25 ml lemon juice, freshly squeezed
4 tsp sugar syrup

Method:

 Add ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
Shake vigorously until chilled.
Strain into a chilled coupe glass.
Serve garnished with a lemon zest, if desired.

*Note: some variations of the gin sour may also include egg white.

Then try this: Ginny Aperol Spritz

50ml Aperol
75ml sparkling wine
25ml gin
Soda water
1 slice of orange

Add lots of ice to a large copa or wine glass and pour in the Aperol, sparkling wine and gin. Stir gently, then top up with a splash of soda (if desired). Garnish with a slice of orange.

Then try this: Gin Old Fashioned

50ml gin
2 dashes Angostura bitters
1 tsp water
1 cube sugar

Place sugar cube in a heavy-bottomed glass tumbler.
Add 2 dashes of bitter and a teaspoon of water, then muddle until sugar dissolves.
Add gin and stir well. Add ice cubes and a twist of orange peel and let the drink sit for a couple of minutes before serving.

Then try this: Gin Fix

60ml gin
30ml freshly squeezed lemon juice
15ml sugar syrup

Pop all of the ingredients into a shaker along with a lot of ice, and shake for at least 15 seconds. Put some fresh ice into a glass and strain the liquid over the top. Garnish with a lemon slice.

Then try this: Mint Gin Julep

2 tsp sweet sugar syrup*
15 mint leaves
25ml Genever
25ml gin
1 splash soda water

In a Julep cup (or other large glass), muddle together sugar syrup and mint leaves. Fill glass with crushed ice then add the Genever and gin. Top with soda water and stir well to combine.
Serve garnished with a sprig of mint.

40ml gin (Old Tom preferred)
40ml sweet vermouth
1 tsp maraschino liqueur
2 dashes orange bitters
Lemon twist, to garnish

Method:

In a chilled glass, combine all of the ingredients with ice and stir well. Garnish with a twist of lemon and a maraschino cherry, if desired.

Then try this: Gin Daiquiri

60ml gin
22.5ml fresh lime juice
15ml sugar syrup*

Pack a cocktail shaker with ice and add your ingredients, then shake well. Strain your drink into a coupe glass. Garnish with the grapefruit peel and serve.

Then try this: Sparkling Bee’s Knees

35ml gin
20ml honey
20ml lemon juice
70ml Champagne or sparkling wine

Combine the gin, honey and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake for 20 seconds. Strain into a coupe and top up with Champagne.


*To make sugar syrup from scratch, add equal parts sugar to water (try 150ml of each) and bring to a boil in a saucepan. After the sugar has dissolved, allow to cool before adding to your cocktails. Any leftover sugar syrup will keep in the fridge for up to a week or so.
