Pink gin with a twist

Pink gin with a twist

Pink gin is still the flavour of the month, with Gordons, Beefeater Gin and Greenall’s all getting in on the act. The common ingredients to make this popular blush coloured tipple are berries, pink grapefruit, rhubarb and even cherry blossom.

However, the key (and rather bizarre) botanical used to give Elg Gin No.4 its vibrant pink hue is...wait for it...carrots! Danish black carrots to be exact. The extract is produced by soaking the black carrots in 50% pure wheat alcohol for 3 days. Here comes the science bit... the extract contains a wide variety of the flavours form black carrots, including the colour - anthocyanin - a pigment that give red, purple and blue plants their rich colouring. So it is pink gin, but not as we know it...

Pink Gin Cocktail with mint garnish

This botanical wonder turns bright pink when mixed with tonic and tastes delicious as a pink gin and tonic, or as the main ingredient to a pink gin cocktail. It really is some of the best pink gin we have tasted here at CGC, without the artificial sweetness you get with a lot of pink gins out there.
